Next Wednesday is Ash Wednesday. While it is not a Holy Day of Obligation, the Church encourages us to attend Mass. Mass will be celebrated at 6:45 am, 9 am, 12 noon, and 7:30 pm. Ashes will be distributed during all Masses.
On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast. Fasting, as explained by the U.S. Bishops, means eating only one full meal. Some food (not equaling another full meal) is permitted at breakfast and around midday or in the evening – depending on when a person chooses to eat the main or full meal.
On Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all the Fridays of Lent, Catholics 14 years old and older must abstain from eating meat.
