March 1 is Ash Wednesday. While it is not a Holy Day of Obligation, the Church encourages us to attend Mass, which at Holy Cross will be celebrated at 6:45am, 9am, noon, and 7:30pm. Ashes will be distributed during all Masses.
On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast, meaning to eat only one full meal. Some food is permitted during the time of day one would otherwise eat a full meal. Also on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all the Fridays of Lent, Catholics 14 years old and older must abstain from eating meat.
